CHAPTER 24

ALLISON

Dazed, I licked my lips, a metallic taste filling my mouth, as an all-encompassing ache rolled over my body. I tried to open my eyes, blinking slowly, but my vision blurred. Through ringing ears, pops rang out over the sound... What was that sound? I tried to move as something dug into my shoulder, my head light as white spots floated through my vision.

“Wh—”

There was pressure in my chest as I tried to form words. Prying my eyes open, I stared at those trees. The same trees that had blurred for months during my dreams with Devon. The very trees I now passed to get to his meadow during my trips with... Weston.

My memory snapped, the last few minutes coming back to me once I realized the trees were upside down... or, more, I was upside down. Adrenaline slipped through my veins and I forced my eyes open.

“Weston!” I called out, remembering the way his eyes went wide before the SUV heaved and rolled. Searching the cab as I hung from my belt, I realized he wasn’t with us.

Us.

Weston’s driver was still in the front seat, unconsciously hanging, his arms dangling to reach the roof of the vehicle as blood dripped and pooled under him. Above him? The roof now sat on the ground.

I tried to grab the belt still across my chest, panic engulfing me, realizing I was locked in place. Get out, I thought to myself, knowing I couldn’t stay here.

“Over here!” someone shouted through the ringing in my ears. I tugged again, not recognizing the voice, and bracing myself against the roof with one arm while I reached for the buckle holding me hostage. I brushed something cool with the tips of my fingers. The Glock Weston handed me earlier that I’d dropped in the accident. It was a useless hunk of plastic and metal if I couldn’t reach the trigger. My nails scraped it as I reached, inching it a little closer.

The thick plastic connected with my palm just as the window of my door was shattered. I screamed out, wrapping my arms around my face from the glass showering towards me.

“Found you, little bitch,” someone sneered as hands reached in.

I did the one thing Weston told me not to do and squeezed my eyes shut as I flung my arm out and pulled the trigger.

“AHH! Fucking Bitch Shot Me!” the person who broke in the window yelled, hopping backwards.

“ALLISON!”

My head snapped towards the forcefully created opening and I almost cried tears of joy. “Weston!” I called back, my breath ragged as the seat belt pressed against my rib cage.

“Allison! Keep shoo—” Weston was cut off as a gruff sound left him and skin hit skin.

I pointed out the window again, pulling the trigger twice.

“Fucking cunt!” a second person yelled as they hit the side of the vehicle. “Quit shooting or I’ll put a fucking bullet in his head!”

“They’re ly—!” Weston’s voice was cut off as I heard him being struck again.

“Give it here!”

A man jumped through Weston’s side, reaching for the gun.
